Lively Outdoor Living Spaces in North Arlington, VA
As illustrated by the two “before” pictures, the backyard pool was inaccessible and congested when we began this project in North Arlington, VA. Despite having a beautiful back porch and swimming pool, they simply were not connected.
The customer had a vision for a landscape that provided lots of outdoor living spaces around the pool and facilitated easy flow from the house to the pool area. We set about accomplishing these goals by installing lawn space, plantings, and a Flagstone patio with seating walls and a series of steps and landings.
Lawn and Plant Installation
We began creating outdoor living spaces for this home in North Arlington by installing the lawn and new plant material. Our first step was to bring in truckloads of dirt to fill in the hillside below the pool. This allowed us to create lawn space on the back side of the pool and open up the entire area.
The low side of the property is flanked by a mature grove of bamboo. Bamboo is generally thought of as invasive and problematic, so we decided to make the best out of a bad situation and leave it there for privacy screening.
But we wanted to enhance the look and feel of this area, so we installed an outdoor lighting design, using up lighting techniques on the bamboo to create a really unique texture and appearance at night. Inside the fence and in front of the bamboo, we installed a mix of mid-size shrubs to soften the appearance of the fencing and provide seasonal color.
Patio with Seating Wall, Steps, and Landings
Finally, we added a patio with seating walls to create ample entertaining space around the pool and completed the project with a series of steps and landings that connect the back door of the home to the pool space.
We used Pennsylvania Flagstone for the patio and steps, a popular stone for homeowners in the Northern Virginia area that can be recognized by its blue, gray, lilac color. To coordinate with this broad range of colors, we used a combination of Carderock Building stone and Dove Gray Building stone on the landings and patio seating wall.
The design pulled together existing and new elements to create lively outdoor living spaces that are open and inviting in this North Arlington property.
